  4. Records are one of the best tools in determining what vegetables work
  5. best for your garden.
  6.  
  7. Have you ever sat bundled in a cozy blanket with a warm cup of 
  8. something to drink on a blustery winter's day with your seed catalogs
  9. in your lap?  While browsing through the pages and dreaming of the
  10. luscious delicacies which will don your table, you wish you could 
  11. remember what the name of that delicious green bean was that grew so
  12. well in your garden two years ago?  Records will help.
  13.  
  14. Records will tell you not only the name of that delicious, easy-to-
  15. grow green bean, but where you bought it and how much you bought.
  16.  
  17. This is the goal of records, to keep track of your favorites, tell
  18. you which vegetables work best for you, and which ones don't.
  19.  
  20. You don't need fancy record-keeping materials, just a school-type
  21. folder with pockets, and brass hole fasteners, and some notebook
  22. paper.
  23.  
  24. Write down the things you would like to grow, and the things you know
  25. have done well for you in the past.

  27. Send away for your seed catalogs early, December is not too soon.

  32. When your seed catalogs come, order early.  The seed companies are
  33. a little like the IRS, they have a lot of mail to handle.  If you
  34. want to plant something early in the last part of February, make 
  35. sure your order is in the mail by the end of December.  You can take
  36. the chance that it will be on the grocery store rack but the stores
  37. don't usually put the seed racks out until March.
  38.  
  39. Record what you have ordered as soon as you have made the final
  40. decisions on what to order and have committed to the order form.
  41. Record the name of each variety, the company each was obtained from,
  42. and the date ordered.  This way, you will be able to check your
  43. records to refresh your memory while waiting for the seeds and plants
  44. to arrive.

  46. Next year you will thank yourself for the time taken to keep a 
  47. written record of the garden's progress.
  48.  
  49. That is what the record is for.  Continue throughout the garden
  50. season to record what is happening with each variety, the weather
  51. conditions and how the plant reacted, it's yield, and any problems
  52. or special positive remarks about that particular plant.

  54. When the seeds arrive, check the package for the recommended 
  55. planting methods and times.  This will give you a general idea of
  56. when to plan each individual type of vegetable, but you will need
  57. a planting chart, adapted for your particular area.  Choose the exact
  58. planting date, using the planting chart and record the date by the 
  59. particular vegetable.  Make this record stand out because you will 
  60. need to find it easily for spring planting.  Recording this
  61. information in red ink is helpful.   To get one of these customized
  62. planting charts you must get the REGISTERED VERSION of ORGANIC
  63. INTENSIVE GARDENING.  To register return to the Main Menu and choose
  64. HOW TO REGISTER.

  66. Next season and the seasons to follow will get better and easier as
  67. your records guide you to the best vegetables suited to you and your
  68. area.

  70. Now that you have a record for future reference it's time to start
  71. planting.  This will be discussed in the next chapter.  Return to the
  72. Main Menu and choose PLANTING THE GARDEN.
